Flowers for Algernon is the title of a science fiction short story and a novel by American writer Daniel Keyes. The short story, written in 1958 and first published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1960. I read this book back in 8th grade, no one really realized how good of a book this actually was and it’s honestly a shame. This novel introduced various adult and real topics. The main character was mentally disabled and became somewhat of a science experiment throughout the novel. The scientists wanted to “cure” the mentally disabled. I personally loved this book because of its raw themes and emotions it took me through. We get to experience things for the first time with the main protagonist Charlie. Because of his mental disability Charlie would never be seen as “normal”. It’s an extremely good read if given a chance.
